Breaking Down The Pattison Canadian International

The feature race on Saturday's Woodbine card is the 73rd running $2 million Pattison Canadian International. This race is part of the Breeders' Cup Series Win and You're In races and will grant the winner an entry into the $3 million Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf on November 6th at Churchill Downs. Let's break down the race:

Early Pace

After watching the Northern Dancer Stakes from September 19th, a prep race for this event, I would expect Fifty Proof and Marsh Side to jump out to the early pace again. I would also expect Redwood and Simmard to sit off those two leaders for a little bit and all other horses to file in somewhere in between. Keep an eye on Chinchon, who should fall behind the field but angle to the middle of the track under Garrett Gomez.

The Backstretch

Fifty Proof and Marsh Side should still be battling it out for the lead as the field heads to the back stretch. Simmard may decide to jump into the fray and Redwood should be tucked in behind the leader on the rail. Al Khali should be trying to move a little bit closer to the lead but Europeans Chinchon, More's Wells and Joshua Tree should still all be in the back, waiting to make their move.

Coming Home

This race should have a great finish to it. In the Northern Dancer, Marsh Side fell off the pace, leaving Fifty Proof to run up on his own. Redwood will most likely be looking to ride the rail to victory again, but I'm not sure it will open up as nicely for him as it did in that Northern Dancer race. With Fifty Proof trying to hold the lead, I look for Al Khali to come out from fifth or sixth to give him a run. Then the Europeans from the back should all be coming on strong. I like Chinchon to come from the back to snatch the victory and he might be a winner by one to three lengths. Fifty Proof may hang on for second, Redwood might get blocked to finish third and I like Al Khali to come fourth.

I'm really looking forward to great race Saturday and here's the summary of my predictions (and my superfecta ticket).

My Selections

1. Chinchon
2. Fifty Proof
3. Redwood
4. Al Khali

Who do you like in this race? If you can't make it out to the track, you can watch live coverage of the Pattison Canadian International on TSN in Canada and on ESPN2 in the United States from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Enjoy the race!
