Where's Daverick Been?

If you look back in my blog roll a little bit, I wrote about a top Fort Erie sprinter Daverick on August 18th. The horse had just won his fourth race in a row at five furlongs that day, using a style that caught my eye and blew away the rest of his competition. Daverick has not raced since August 17th and I'm a little curious as to why. He most likely isn't injured, as the Daily Racing Form has recorded his last workout on September 19th.

That makes me wonder. Is the general sense at Fort Erie that the rest of the competition doesn't have a chance against a sprinter who has posted a 92 Beyer Speed Figure already this year? Daverick is also a likely candidate for horse of the year at the Fort Erie meet, as he has earned more money then any other horse racing there this season. In five starts at Fort Erie this year, Daverick has won four with one second place finish and has $44,720 in purse earnings.

The other thought is maybe the connections, owner Sante Cigana and trainer Justin Nixon, are thinking of graduating Daverick out of Fort Erie and down into the United States. Daverick has run at Woodbine before on polytrack, with minimal success, so a move to a dirt track in the United States with bigger purses may be in the works. He could show up at Woodbine again now that he seems to have peaked as a four year old but a move to dirt is still more likely. Belmont, Monmouth or Mountaineer would be likely destinations for this sprinter. A move to turf may also not be out of the question as his breeding shows turf top and bottom.

It's unfortunate that a potential horse of the year and sprinter of the year candidate would have to move away from a track he's done so well at just to get a race. I have certainly become a fan of Daverick by watching him in his various starts this year. It will be interesting to see what this horse's next move will be.
