The LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society raised over $10,000 in the 2011 edition of the Queen's Plate saddlecloth auction. The fundraiser, which wrapped up this past Monday, had all 17 saddlecloths of the Queen's Plate starters auctioned on eBay to help provide Ontario's thoroughbreds with a dignified retirement.

After the race concludes, the saddlecloths are signed by each jockey who rides a Queen's Plate horse. Each saddlecloth features a stitched horse name and post position number, along with a square Queen's Plate patch. The top bid this year went to the Inglorious saddlecloth, autographed by jockey Luis Contreras, which sold for $4,550.

The fundraiser was initiated four years ago by Woodbine Entertainment Group's Jane Holmes and Steve Koch, and attracted interest this year from owners and trainers, as well as horse lovers and racing fans. This year, one caring mother purchased two saddlecloths, one worn by Queen's Plate runner-up Hippolytus and the other sported by Oh Canada, as a birthday present for her young son, who had fallen in love with the two horses on Plate day.
