Omar Moreno Wins One For Canada

Woodbine based jockey Omar Moreno made some noise in the American racing world last night as he took home the 2010 Eclipse Award for top Apprentice Jockey. Moreno beat out the two other finalists, Angel Serpa and Forest Boyce, by a massive margin. Moreno captured 197 of the 216 votes cast for the award.

Moreno had a season to remember in Canada in 2010 as he captured 146 races between Woodbine and Fort Erie. His purse earnings totaled to $5.4 million and he finished in the top five in the Woodbine jockey standings in 2010, a remarkable achievement for an apprentice rider. Moreno captured the 2009 Sovereign Award for the top Apprentice Jockey in Canada and looks to have that distinction available to him again for his 2010 season. The Sovereign Awards ceremony will take place on Friday, April 1st, the day before the 2011 Woodbine meet begins.
