Sutherland Victorious On First Day At Del Mar

It didn't take Chantal Sutherland long to make an impact at one of Southern California's most prestigious meets.

The former Woodbine jockey recorded her first victory at Del Mar on the meet's first day, crossing the line first on Mentidoso in Wednesday's sixth race. Going off at odds of 18-1, Mentidoso had one rival beaten in the early going, sat well off of the pace and then made his move at the half-mile pole and won the six furlong, $25,000 claiming race for three-year-olds and up, by two and three quarters of a length.

Making the story even more interesting is the fact that Mentidoso was claimed by an interesting stable name as far as Sutherland, a Canadian, is concerned. Trainer Jack Carava claimed the three-year-old gelding for new owners La Canada Stables LLC.

Unfortunately for Sutherland, the victory in Wednesday's sixth race was her lone in-the-money finish on the card. In five other races, Sutherland could do no better than a trio of sixth place finishes in the second, fifth and ninth races.

Sutherland returns to action at Del Mar on Thursday with three mounts on the eight race card.
